Sleepy Hollow is lost in a Grimm-like fairy tale

10 Jul

SLEEPY-HOLLOW

Director Tim Burton’s imagination takes Washington Irving’s remarkable short story, “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow” and changes the tale to fit his aesthetic leanings, but that is no surprise because Burton’s career has demonstrated his visual imagination is much stronger than his ability to deliver a narrative story from start to finish. The film is headless like its infamous villain because it is far from complete. The new direction is spooky, but the melodrama becomes too much to bear and Sleepy Hollow is lost in a Grimm-like fairy tale of witches and dark forests. Johnny Depp (Ichabod Crane) and Christina Ricci (Katrina Van Tassel) are the perfect actors for production designer Rick Heinrichs and set decorator Peter Young’s taste for the macabre, but their performances reminded me of porcelain figures stuck in a diorama.

21 Jump Street turns high school upside down

28 Dec

21-jump-street

I had low expectations when I heard 21 Jump Street was first announced,  but Michael Bacall and Jonah Hill’s collaboration on the script turned this story upside down into the most surprising film of 2012.

Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Jenko (Channing Tatum) are police officers that go undercover in a high school. Jenko is the dominant male jock who thinks he is going to lead the investigation while Schmidt is an out of shape techie playing back up, but the high school power structure is reversed on this campus and the popular kids are not jocks, but rather tech savvy social media kids with a keen sense of business. Jenko is lost and must give way to Schmidt’s socially awkward expertise.

The chemistry/bromance between Hill and Tatum elevate the film to another level while the vulgar dialogue and physical humor provide a more realistic teen movie that shows how much high school has changed for the good and the bad.
