Safety Not Guaranteed is fun, fresh, and much more

Safety-not-guaranteed

Most good films come from a great story, but the script for Safety Not Guaranteed came from a true-life classified ad seeking a time traveling companion. Screenwriter Derek Connolly uses this as his inspiration to write a clever script about a trio of reporters assigned to find the person behind the advertisement and to write a story about him.

Jeff (Jake Johnson) takes on the assignment, but brings two interns along, Darius (Aubrey Plaza) and Arnau (Karan Soni) so they can do all the work while he is trying to “hook up” with an old girlfriend. Darius befriends Kenneth (Mark Duplass), but finds herself questioning her sanity as she begins to believe in this oddball who is convinced he can travel back in time.

Director Colin Trevorrow brilliantly brings Connolly’s characters together with a level of honesty that keeps this comedy from going overboard into the absurd. The film is fun, fresh, and much more than a short advertisement.

I wish they kept the ending open ended, but the movie was fun, nonetheless.
