The Last Dragon continues to glow

Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon is one of those cult films that has survived over the years through DVD because of its familiar story line and audiences’ nostalgic connection to 1980’s fashion and music.  It features an unknown martial art actor known as Taimak. He plays Leroy Green, an urban youth that has studied kung fu from a Chinese master and must go out on his own to find the ultimate level known as “The Glow”.   His nemesis is the hilarious Shogun of Harlem, Sho’nuff (Julius Carey).  This is not a Berry Gordy production without a Motown label talent and music. Vanity stars as the damsel in distress. I remember seeing this film in the theater as a teenager and getting excited to have seen a modern kung fu film with young actors in an American city. Today, the film is campy and bad in more ways than one, but I still enjoy watching this movie from my youth.
