The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the Eigth Dimension

19 Sep

The film’s title does not adequately describe this quirky 1980’s science fiction movie that has flown under the radar for most audiences. There are so many odd details thrown into this film that it seemed like the writer and director had a bet to see who could throw in the weirder stuff. The title character is an adventurer/neurosurgeon/musician/genius/etc. that happens to have perfected his oscillation overthruster so he can jump dimensions and fight Dr. Lizardo (John Lithgow) and the evil aliens from Planet 10 with his friends, the Hong Kong Cavaliers. Did everyone get that?

I saw this film with my brother in the Eighties and loved it. We couldn’t stop talking about the cast and characters: Peter Weller (Buckaroo), Jeff Goldblum (New Jersey), Christopher Lloyd (John Bigboote), Ellen Barkin (Penny Priddy) and Lewis Smith (Perfect Tommy). It was a nerd’s dream sci-fi cast that left us talking about the possibilities of traveling space and time for week’s to come.
